Atlanta Braves - Preview
Feb 18th, 2007 by winabango
The beasts of the NL East had their run of division titles interrupted last year. This year doesn’t look to be much different as the Phillies, Mets and Marlins look strong again this year. Have no fear, there are several fantasy players that are valuable on the Braves.
Top 3 Players:
- Andruw Jones, OF - It seems like he has been playing forever, but is only 29. Last year he improved his walk rate and hit as many HRs as he did. If he continues that improvement this year, his average may actually be worth while.
- Brian McCann, C - Best NL catcher with 24 HRs last year. Solid young player with no one to take away his playing time, and at the most scarce position.
- John Smoltz, SP - Solid and steady with good numbers. Nothing flashy but provides great ERA and WHIP.
Top Prospect:
- Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C - 1st round pick in the 2003 draft, and hit .314 with a .519 slugging percentage in Single-A ball in 2005.
Rebound Player:
Jeff Francoeur, OF - He had great stats in 2005 (.300/.336/.549 ), but ended 2006 with ( .260/.293/.449 ). Good young player that should rebound this year.
Player to Avoid in your draft:
Tim Hudson, SP - He has not been anything close to what he was in Oakland. He may show improvement over last year, but let someone else take the chance on him.
Not on everyones list, but should be:
Mike Hampton, SP - I am not saying that you should draft him, but he should be on your radar during the beginning of the season. If he returns to his dominate ways, he will be the steal of the year.
High Risk / High Reward
Chuck James, SP - Can throw a 5 hit shutout with 7 strikeouts, and then give up 7 hits with 6 earned runs the next start. A .50 GB/FB ratio can be a bit unnerving.
