The Short Picks

Mar 31st, 2007 by winabango

Welcome to week one of the fantasy baseball season. Each week I will try to uncover potential waiver wire players that will help your team during the “short” days. This week is a tough one, so I decided that I would point out 3 position players that have had an incredible spring, and should stay hot during the first week of the year.

  1. Shane Victorino - I know that I have written about him before, but check out his spring numbers. He scored 14 runs (mainly due to hitting in the 2 spot), hit 2 homeruns and stole 4 bases. Oh and hit a solid .324 for the spring.
  2. Reed Johnson - This is the very quiet leadoff hitter for the Toronto Blue Jays. He scored 7 runs, knocked in 8, and hit 3 homeruns while posting a .435 batting average. Take a good look at this one, because he has plenty of ability and a good lineup behind him.
  3. Lastings Milledge - Lastings is the one Met prospect that everyone has been after, but was a bust last year when he finally was called up. Needless to say, he is completely off of everyone’s radar. Here is what he has done this spring; He scored 10 runs, knocked in 8, stole 5 bases, and maintained a batting average of .368.  The only thing is that he does not have the starting job, but may see some playing time this week.

All 3 of these players may still be available, and should provide some offense during the “short” days.

There is one pitcher that I think you should also take a look at. Adam Loewen from Baltimore posted an ERA of 1.42 and struck out 20 in 19.0 innings of work. In fact, I picked him up in one of my leagues. I guess if I offer a suggestion, I should also follow through on it.

I encourage all of you to post additional recommendations of players in the comments section. My goal is for this to be an interactive weekly post.
