Rate My Team
Apr 1st, 2007 by winabango
I have received several requests for the “rate my team” style of posts. So let’s check out Ryan’s team in his 14-team league. He wrote:
I’m in the second year of a 6-keeper league with a straight draft system (no auction). It’s a 6×6 H2H league, with the following categories: R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS, W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/9
Coming into this season, I had too many keeper-worthy guys, so I traded Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, Scott Kazmir, and Brett Myers for Alfonso Soriano. It was a hefty price to pay, but three of those guys would have hit the draft otherwise, and I’d much rather have a top-five performer than to let that value drift into the open draft. (The one sad circumstance of this deal is that I made one more opponent into a possible fantasy monster, but there wasn’t much else that could be done…)
That trade left my keepers going into the draft as follows:
A. Soriano (OF)
C. Utley (2B)
M. Teixeira (1B)
J. Mauer (C)
J. Morneau (1B/Util)
J. Rollins (SS)
Not bad, right? Anyway, here’s my draft:
7. (96) Aaron Harang SP
8. (101) Matt Cain SP
9. (124) Dan Haren SP
10. (129) Michael Cuddyer 1B,OF
11. (152) Brian Fuentes RP
12. (157) Jason Isringhausen RP
13. (180) Chad Tracy 3B
14. (185) Coco Crisp OF
15. (208) Octavio Dotel RP
16. (213) Scott Olsen SP
17. (236) Matt Garza SP
18. (241) Anthony Reyes SP
19. (264) Kevin Kouzmanoff Util
20. (269) Corey Hart OF
21. (292) J.J. Hardy SS
22. (297) Tim Lincecum SP
23. (320) Chris Reitsma RP
24. (325) Dustin Pedroia 2B,SS
25. (348) Rod Barajas C
I took Barajas only because I wasn’t sure if Mauer would be ready for opening day… Since then I’ve swapped him for Edgar Gonzalez (Ari - SP,RP); I also dropped Reitsma to pick up Dave Duncan reclamation project Kip Wells.
With all that in mind, rate my team!
You had the keeper problem that all of us fantasy baseball owners wish we had. I have one league that kept 2 players, and I had to keep Johan Santana and Ichiro. I really had no other players to keep, because I had to dump Manny during the playoffs when he was being “Manny”. I think you did the right thing to acquire Soriano, but I would have sent Mauer instead of Holliday. Decent catchers can be found in the middle of drafts, especially ones that can hit for more power then Mauer. Because of that, I believe your outfield is a bit weak. The top of your rotation is extremely solid, especially with Harang, but the bottom of it is a bit too young and risky. I am a big fan of Reyes, Olsen, and especially Garza, but you have no pitcher that has pitched over 200 innings for 3 consecutive years. The bullpen has only one question mark; injuries. If Isringhausen and Dotel stay healthy, then you have no worries.
Overall, (without knowing the other keepers) I think this team would do well in a head-to-head style league. Pitch and Ditch may be a very good strategy if some of your back end starters struggle at the start of the year. Hopefully everyone stays healthy, and you don’t spend most of the year fishing for replacements from the waiver wire.

how about another rate my team:

Where can I improve?
Thank you for your ADP draft kit. It helped me a lot in my drafts. The league is a Mix-12 teams with poistions:
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CF, RF, LF, Util, SP*3, RP*2, P*3, and Bench*5. The scoring cataglories are: R, HR, RBI, SB, K, E, AVG, OPS, W, L, SV, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP, K/BB. Here is my draft result:
1. (9) Chase Utley 2B
2. (16) Carlos Lee LF
3. (33) Derrek Lee 1B
4. (40) Aramis Ramírez 3B
5. (57) Jonathan Papelbon RP
6. (64) Ben Sheets SP
7. (81) Troy Glaus 3B,SS
8. (88) Jeremy Bonderman SP
9. (105) Álex Ríos RF
10. (112) Rich Harden SP
11. (129) Howie Kendrick 1B,2B
12. (136) Aaron Harang SP
13. (153) Mike Cameron CF
14. (160) José Valverde RP
15. (177) Jonathan Broxton RP
16. (184) Adam LaRoche 1B
17. (201) Michael Barrett C
18. (208) Dustin Hermanson RP
19. (225) Ian Snell SP
20. (232) Shane Victorino LF,CF,RF
21. (249) Pat Neshek RP
22. (256) Anthony Reyes SP
Hermanson has been dropped for Brandon Lyon. Would you please rate my team and give any suggestion? Some players on wavier/FA are: CF: Granderson, Duffy, Rowand, Monroe,Preston Wilson. Catcher: Varitek, Russell Martin, Lo Duca, Laird, and Olivo are also available. Your advise is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Thank you.
I think both of you did an outstanding job!
Steve, I love the pairing of Oswalt and Zito with Hill and Wainwright. Your team does lack a true power hitter (except for Soriano)though, but it does have good overall team speed. You need to do something about saves. Coffey and Torres will not provide enough week in and week out, however in a NL Only league, there is not much more that you can do.
Benson, You definitely have power, but are a bit short on speed. I would try to find a way to slide Duffy into a utility role for your team without giving away Victorino. The pitching is the quintessential High Risk High Reward rotation. I would not have drafted both Harden and Sheets. If they both stay healthy, it will pay great rewards to you, but the odds are against that happening.
Let me know if there is anything else that I can help with.
Kelly
Luke Scott or Corey Hart?
Joe Beimel or Brandon Lyon?
Thanks
Thank you, Kelly. You rock.
Have the chance to pick up one of the following…who::
Xavier Nady
Mike Jacobs
Corey Hart
Scott Hairston
also:
Joe Beimel or Brandon Lyon?
please ignore the prior post…luke scott is gone now
thanks
If you are looking for a player with huge upside, then Corey Hart. Nady will hit in the middle of the lineup in Pittsburgh, but Hart should get more At Bats over the year. the best thing about Jacobs is that he is in his “magical” age 27 year. I believe Corey Hart is the better pickup, but keep a close eye on Jacobs.
Beimel or Lyon? Are there any other options you are looking at? If I must choose, then it would be Lyon.
Kelly
Thanks,
Beimel or Lyon? I am looking for someone who will get HOLDS and have the odd chance for a save, since I am so thin there
Steve,
Kelly and I are in a league together and I have have a small obsession with middle relievers. So if I may, allow me to answer your question regarding Beimel or Lyon.
Looking at your team, you are already loaded for HOlDS. With Capps, Heilman, Wheeler and Coffey you will get a fair share of HOLDS. Heilman/Capps/Wheeler are the main candidates for their respective teams on Holds, so you’re set there. I do like Coffey for the occasional Hold, Win and Save…plus he has the best stuff outside of Bray on the Reds and likely the highest ceiling so that’s all positives there. Since you have punted SVs for your team, I would focus more on dominateing Holds…and if Wheeler does get the Closer role, I would consider trading him right away.
So the question is what additional MR can you add to truly dominate HDs?
As Winabanjo said, of your choices that would Lyon. While you may be concerned with him playing in a hitter’s park, he also faces the Padres, Giants and Dodgers often enough to offset that park. Also given the relative weakness of that division, he may come out at the end of the year in the top 10 in Holds again this year and quite possibly in the top 5.
So yeah, go with Lyon.
Thanks Ed for the help. In fact I took Lyon in our league.
