Brett Myers the Closer?!?

Well not just yet. In a what are you thinking (I would use other language, but this a family program) move, The Phillies moved Brett Myers to the bullpen. Now moving a pitcher from the starting rotation to the bullpen is not a rare occurence. However, moving your staff ace for the past few years is. If you have been reading my site for a while, then you are quite aware of my rants about the Phillies bullpen. At least now they have someone who can get guys out when it counts.
From a fantasy baseball perspective, we may have another John Smoltz situation on our hands here. I actually think that this may be a great move in a month from now. Think about it for a second. Myers works in the bullpen, and gets his mechanics straightened out by pitching more often. Then Tom “that ball flashed by me” Gordon breaks his hip tripping over his walker. Boom, Myers is the instant closer, and has fantasy value again. Hey, stranger things have happened.
I was reading the post that Tim at rotoauthority posted today, and I agree with him 100%. Give it a few days, and snag Myers after other owners have dropped him. If he doesn’t get dropped, then offer a trade to pick him up. The odds are that he will either end up as the Phillies closer, or back in the rotation.
A pitcher with Myers’ ability does not stay in middle relief for long. Give him some time, and see what happens.
