Hughes is coming

Apr 24th, 2007 by winabango

I have had several questions over the last few days about Phil Hughes. He is in fact debuting against Toronto on Thursday. Unfortunately, for those of us who are playing in Yahoo leagues, he is unavailable until after his first start. If he is available, and you have a need for a starting pitcher because of injuries, then I would pick him up.

Now the next question is; What can I expect from him? Most projections have him posting a solid ERA and good strikeout rates. His three starts in Triple-A ran the spectrum from outstanding to not so good. Overall he has posted a 2-1 record with a 3.94 ERA, 17 strikeouts and 4 walks. That shows that he has good control, which is essential for any young pitcher. Do not expect him to put up Liriano numbers, nor pitch deep into games to start. However, with the Yankee lineup behind him, he should be a very serviceable starter for any fantasy baseball team.

Update: Phil Hughes is now available in yahoo leagues.  He clear waivers on the 27th.

do you like Hughes more than Dan Cabrera?

Not for this year. Daniel Cabrera will be the better pitcher for this year. Cabrera has a solid upside now that he has his control in place this year. Hughes would be a long term investment.
