Freddy Garcia and steals

I was listening to the Phillies game on Sunday, and they mentioned a stat that just about blew my mind. It seemed so absurd that I had to go look for it myself. Sure enough, I found a stat that is mind boggling.
Freddy Garcia allowed base stealers to reach 2nd at a 95.2% success rate. So that doesn’t seem to bad at first glance. Maybe only 13 runners actually attempted. Nope. Last year, 38 runners were successful at stealing a base against Garcia. That translates to a stolen base every 5.4 innings pitched. He gave up 2 on Sunday.
So that started me to look for other pitchers that may also give up a ton of stolen bases. Here are some others that I have found:
- Freddy Garcia - 38 SB allowed - 5.4 innings per SB
- Chris Young - 38 SB allowed - 4.7 innings per SB
- Tim Wakefield - 24 SB allowed - 5.8 innings per SB
- Josh Johnson - 19 SB allowed - 5.9 innings per SB
- Randy Johnson - 21 SB allowed - 9.8 innings per SB
- Jose Contreras - 21 SB allowed - 9.3 innings per SB
- Derek Lowe - 25 SB allowed - 8.7 innings per SB
- Brandon Webb - 24 SB allowed - 9.8 Innings per SB
These stats point out that if you have speed position players facing any of these pitchers, play them. The odds are in your favor that you will get a stolen base from them once they get on.
Good stuff. I always had a hunch pitchers had just as much of an effect in allowing basestealers as catchers do, but never knew where to look.
