Runs Created

About a month ago I wrote about a stat that is a great indication of what production a player provides for his team. For those of you that may have missed that post, Runs Created is a stat that was created by Bill James. To put it simply, it is how many runs a player has created for his team. It is obviously far more complicated to calculate, but you get the idea.
The premise behind it is that two players can have the same batting average, but can create significantly different amount of runs for his team. So when you are debating about a player on the waiver wire, check to see how many runs he creates for his team as compared to another. If that player ranks high in that stat, he will provide a larger impact to your team.
Here are some players that my be available with high Runs Created numbers.
- Adrain Gonzalez - SD, 1B - I hope that is actually owned in all mixed leagues, but I know that in some shallow leagues he is available. Most people have already noticed his .298 batting average, and his 9 homeruns. Did you know that he creates 34 runs, and is second to only A-Rod in all of the majors?
- Josh Willingham - FLA, OF - I know that he has flown under my radar this year, because he does not have the precious catcher eligibility this year. However he creates 8.9 runs per 9. That is solid production.
- Aaron Rowand - PHI, OF - How about that, a Phillie creating runs and his name is not Howard, Utley, or Rollins. He creates 9.5 runs per game and hits .407 with runners in scoring position.
- Shawn Green - NYM, OF - Still not the same production of several years ago, but he manages to create 8.7 runs per game. That is solid, and the Mets lineup will give him plenty of RBI chances.
- Jhonny Peralta - CLE, SS - Everybody’s favorite shortstop to doubt. Most of those people are probably the owners who took him last year with a top 5 pick. However, this year he creates 8.5 runs per game and is hitting .393 with runner in scoring position. The skills are there.
For those of you in really deep leagues, Ross Gload and Ryan Sweeney from the Royals rank in the top 100 in runs created. If you would like to see the top 100 players in runs created, click here.
