The short picks - week 7
May 13th, 2007 by winabango
Due to time constraints, I have not had the time to offer recommendations for fringe picks for your teams. I enjoy doing this a lot, so here are the selections for the 7th week of the baseball season. As before, I will attempt to dig up 3 position players and 3 2-start pitchers that you may want to consider for the week. Several teams play 7 games this week, and this weekend’s interleague play will be the first time this year that owners who carry DH players on their roster will need to worry about playing time for them. So here we go.
- Josh Willingham, OF, FLA - As I mentioned in a post earlier this week, Willingham is producing a good amount of runs for the Marlins this year. This week he faces two weak pitching staffs in Pit (4 games) and TB (3 games).
- Geoff Jenkins, OF, MIL - Jenkins is a very streaky hitter, but has still managed to post a .323 batting average this year in 99 at bats. He may not play everyday this week, but when he does, he will be in Philly for 4 games.
- Ryan Theriot, 2B, CHC - For those of you in shallow leagues, Theriot has been incredible over the last month. Hitting .352 with 14 runs scored and 5 stolen bases. He has some tough matchups this week (NYM, CHW), but has been playing very well. With 2B and SS eligibility, he will be a good fill in player on an off day.
Here are some 2-start pitchers:
- James Shields, TB (TEX, FLA) - Possibly one of the best surprises of the Devil Ray’s team. He faces two offenses that are very inconsistent, and both starts are at home. As long as the Rays give him some offensive support, he should do just fine this week.
- Tim Wakefield, BOS (DET, ATL) - Why should you take him for his 2 starts? Because a 1.29 ERA and 1.10 WHIP says you should. Boston’s hot offense would be the other reason as to why. They have scored 198 runs in 36 games this year (5.5 runs per game).
- Greg Maddux, SD (CIN, at SEA) - 5 years ago this would be a no brainer, but Maddux has lost some of his Fantasy luster. However both of his starts are in pitcher friendly parks. He may not give you a ton of strikeouts, but he should do just fine in his two starts this week.
2 start pitcher to avoid
- Jason Marquis, CHC (at NYM, CHW) - This is a risky pick with the 2 offenses that Marquis is facing this week. Sure he has won his last 5 starts, and is extremely hot. In his last start he pitched a complete game, and there is where the problem is. More often then not, the next 2 starts after a complete game are a struggle. Knowing that, and the power of the Mets and White Sox, I would avoid him this week.
whats wrong with r weeks?
