What’s wrong with Rickie Weeks?

A reader posted in the comments section of the “short picks” and asked the question. You ask and you shall receive. To answer the question about Rickie Weeks, I want to start with his last two years in the league.
2005 - 360 At Bats - .239 AVE - 13 HR - 15 SB
2006 - 359 At Bats - .279 AVE - 8 HR - 19 SB
2007 - 131 At Bats - .237 AVE - 5 HR - 7 SB
So according to the last two years, Weeks is on pace for his batting average, homeruns, and maybe even stolen bases. It seems like there is nothing wrong with him. But let’s not stop there. Here are some other peripheral stats from the last two years:
2005 - .42 BB/K - .333 OBP - .156 ISO - .291 BABIP - 49 RC
2006 - .33 BB/K - .363 OBP - .125 ISO - .355 BABIP - 57 RC
2007 - .73 BB/K - .344 OBP - .206 ISO - .260 BABIP - 22 RC
So according to these sets of stats, Weeks has definitely improved his walk to strikeout rate, and his ISO is at its highest in three years. His On Base Percentage is on par, but his Batting Average of Balls in Play is low. On the other hand, his BABIP in 2006 was abnormally high, which inflated some of his stats from last year. Conversely, Weeks has not created as many runs for his team this year as he did last year. Give Weeks some time, and the BABIP will come back to normal. That should raise his average maybe another 10 to 15 points.
So what’s wrong with Rickie Weeks? Nothing. He seems to be on pace for what he has done over the last two years.
