First Quarter Report - AL East
May 23rd, 2007 by winabango
Now that we are at the quarter point of the baseball season, I will take a look at each division and try to uncover some interesting fantasy aspects. Our first contestant is the AL East. All of you who thought the Red Sox would be destroying everybody please raise your hand. If you did, then you are a Red Sox homer. Here are some observations that I have on the division:
Surprise Player
BJ Upton, 2B TB - The can’t miss prospect from several years ago has finally arrived. If you drafted him, good hunting on your part. Most people grabbed him off of the waiver wire. As I said last week, don’t expect his performance to continue, but a .280 batting average with 20+ homeruns, and 20+ steals is still a great bargain.
Disappointing Player
Robinson Cano, 2B NYY - So I could have put any Yankee not named A-Rod, Posada, and Jeter here. Cano was slated to be the 2nd best fantasy second baseman this year. He is only hitting .242, but has also been lousy in the field as well. The only hope is that he will play as well in the 2nd half as he did last year.
Most Costly Injury to Owners
Roy Halladay, SP TOR - A lot of owners invested a 4th or 5th round pick on Mr. Halladay. Not only is he injured, but he managed to wreck many owners ERA on the way out. I feel sorry for those of you who had Halladay and Ryan on your team. Maybe the Blue Jays should fire their trainer like the Yankees did.
Player To Watch
Jon Lester, SP BOS - Lester could be the feel good story of the rest of the season. After a battle with cancer, he is on the comeback trail and doing very well. Currently he is very strict pitch counts in Triple-A, and retired 10 in a row in his last start. He will be a nice addition to the rotation in the middle of the year.
Team Stats
Most Runs Scored - Boston (226)
Most Homeruns - Tampa Bay (52)
Most Walks - Boston (185)
Most Strikeouts - Tampa Bay (350)
Lowest Team ERA - Boston (3.45)
Lowest Opponent Batting Average - Boston (.304)
Most Strikeouts - Baltimore (306)
Best Fielding Percentage - Baltimore (.989)
Most Double Plays - New York (46)
Most Errors - Tampa Bay (39)
Basically from a fantasy perspective you want all Boston players. If you are considering pitch-and-ditch options, avoid going against Boston, especially if they are at home. It is a good thing that Tampa Bay has a good offense this year. Otherwise their pitchers would never get any wins. At this point in the season you will want to avoid the tail spinning Toronto team as well.
hey bro…. i passed on that deal. I cant pick up another starter with out having a place for him to start. Clemens is making me very nervous. I think it was a mistake coming back to early. he needed sum cardio work outs or something. vh1 celeb fit club??? d wells, sabathia, clemens
do i try and dump clemens now?
Great article, keep them coming! Your the reason I’m in first place in my 7 team roto, for more reasons than just your articles. You rock Kel.
Thanks Duz, I enjoy being at the bottom of that league. Somebody has to do be there. It seems that everything that I do in that league completely backfires on me.
I am not real keen on Clemens at this point. I have this gut feeling that this is the year he flops.
