Kevin Slowey and Gallardo
May 29th, 2007 by winabango
It looks like Kevin Slowey will be called up to replace Ramon Ortiz in the Minnesota rotation. Although it is not official, the Twins will bring up Slowey over Garza. Slowey is a control style pitcher that will get a decent amount of strikeouts per game. Garza has been told to work on changing up his pitches more, and not relying so heavily on the fastball.
Here are his minor league stats from this year
6 Wins and 2 loses
1.54 ERA
0.86 WHIP
57 strikeouts and only 5 walks
.200 batting average against
Those are some serious numbers. The largest fear about Slowey is he pitches to contact. I am not sure that I buy that theory. He has 57 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched. He may pitch to contact, but he can also make batters miss. I personally think that he will be a better Chien-Ming Wang.
So should you pick up Slowey? Certainly in an AL-Only. In deeper mixed leagues, I don’t see why not. He should not hurt your ERA, nor your WHIP, and will strikeout more then a Greg Maddux would. The Twins defense is about as good as it gets up the middle. Don’t forget that th Twins also play very well in the second half of the season. I have already picked him up in my 12-team mixed league.
On another note, Yovani Gallardo has been added to Yahoo. I am not sure as to why, but he has been. I unfortunately missed the boat, and I just wanted to make sure that none of you did. I have been checking for weeks, and with no call-up in site, I didn’t check for about four days. So what happens? Yahoo adds him, and I miss out in my 12-team mixed roto league. That is why I now have Slowey. Now I can add that mistake to not picking up Ryan Garko and Carlos Quentin from the waiver wire two weeks ago when I had the chance. At least I am still in 3rd place for the time being.
