First Quarter Report - NL Central
Jun 8th, 2007 by winabango
I was looking at a few things and all of a sudden I realized that I had not finished the First Quarter Report for two divisions. So with no more delay, here is the NL Central. This division is arguably the weakest in baseball. The Brewers have been struggling and the still have a solid hold on the division. Here are some observations:
Surprise Player
JJ Hardy, ss MIL - Wow what a start to the season. 16 homeruns over the whole season from the shortstop position would make any owner jump for joy. Hardy is a solid hitter that has battled injuries over the past few seasons. Those of you how grabbed him off the wire before anyone else did congrats. I had him until Furcal returned from the DL, DOH!
Disappointing Player
Lance Berkman, 1B HOU - At one point I thought Berkman was a perfect buy low player, and so I traded for him. I have since dealt him away, because he has been so awful. I have Vlad now, so that turned out well for me. The power appears to be gone, and a singles hitter does not cut it for a 2nd round pick in the draft.
Most Costly Injury to Owners
Chris Carpenter, SP STL - What happen to the projected #2 starter in the league? What do you mean his arm fell off? I used a 4th round pick on him! Sound familiar? That is what all Carpenter owners went through after only one start. I don’t think I need to say anything else about it.
Player to Watch
Homer Bailey, SP CIN - As I have said the other day, the Reds have a terrible defense. However this is a pitcher that may be able to change all of that on his own. His is only 21, and this may be a great thing to watch over the 2nd quarter of the season.
Team Stats
Most runs scored - Cincinnati (272)
Most Homeruns - Milwaukee (78)
Most Walks - Cincinnati (195)
Most Strikeouts - Pittsburgh (417)
Lowest Team ERA - Milwaukee (4.02)
Lowest Opponent Batting AVE - Milwaukee (.318)
Most Strikeouts - Chicago (423)
Best Fielding Percentage - Pittsburgh (.986)
Most Double Plays - Pittsburgh (62)
Most Errors - Cincinnati (44)
Basically this division boils down to one word; weak. Of the six teams with the fewest walks this season, five are from the central. So that means that you should always throw pitchers when facing NL Central teams. Oh, and play any hitter going against the teams in this division. In fact play everybody against this division unless Oswalt is pitching.
