Impact of Trades

Jul 31st, 2007 by winabango

It is the MLB Trade Deadline, and many teams made trades that have greatly helped, or hurt, your Fantasy Baseball team. I would like to spend some time checking out the impact of some of these deals.

Matt Morris to Pittsburgh for Rajai Davis - There really has not been any true fantasy value for Matt Morris. So moving from San Francisco to Pittsburgh just means that he will still sit on your waiver wire.

Eric Gagne to Boston for Kason Gabbard and minor league outfielders - Eric Gagne fantasy value has now dropped, but not as much as you might think. I think he will still get a few save opportunities this year, because Boston wants to be careful with Papelbon. Kason Gabbard’s value, which was gaining momentum, has now been all but crushed. Otsuka and Benoit gain some value.

Rob Mackowiak to San Diego for Jon Link - no fantasy impact here

Octavio Dotel to Atlanta for Kyle Davies - Watch out Dotel, Wickman may try to eat you before you can steal the closing job from him. I personally think that Dotel will eventually start to close for Atlanta, but not right away. Kyle Davies will continue get playing time, and prove to be a valuable pitcher a few years from now.

Wilson Betemit to the Yankees for Scott Proctor - Betemit’s value definitely gets a boost at this point since he will most likely play first base for a while. Scott Proctor needed the change in scenery, and he had more value in leagues that have holds as a category.

Phillies get Kyle Lohse for Matt Maloney - Kyle Lohse had no fantasy value previous to this trade. Now that he has the huge Philly offense and defense he may gain a few more wins and so his value increases. Matt Maloney is a solid pitcher that may be in the majors within the next year.

The Padres get Morgan Ensberg - This may actually be a good thing for Ensberg, but owners of Kouzmanoff are not going to be happy.

Mark Teixeira to Atlanta for Jarrod Saltalamacchia - I know there were other players involved like Evlis Andrus (who will be a solid SS) and Ron Mahay (solid RP), Salty and Tex are the main players. This is a win on both sides for fantasy owners. Tex has a ton more protection around him, and salty will actually get regular playing time. salty is now worth owning in almost all formats, and NL-Only and AL-Only players will want to use their high waiver priority on both of these players.

Dan Wheeler to TB for Ty Wigginton - Wiggy gets to hit against NL pitching instead of the AL East, which increases his value slightly. Wheeler should get another chance to close, if not this year, then next year. His value really does not change much.

Phillies acquire Iguchi for Michael Dubee - this is a great trade for the Phillies, and for fantasy owners. Iguchi will add a spark, and can be found on almost all waiver wires at this point. Dubee has solid potential, but will not be major league level for a few years.

Those are my thoughts on some of the deals that happened.
