Three Quarterbacks to Avoid

Paul Greco from www.fantasybaseballguy.com has begun to offer his insight into the Fantasy Football world. Since Paul’s website is focused on Baseball, He has graciously agreed to post his writings here at Fantasy Gameday. I am very excited to have him on board, and I know that you will enjoy his writing.
Three QB’s To Stay Clear Of
Finally, the NFL season is just a few weeks away. While some Fantasy Owners have drafted their teams, other owners have been sitting in their Monday morning quarterback chairs dissecting each pre-season game waiting to strike like charmed cobras on draft day. Fantasy Football drafts are sweeping the nation right now. The problem is, most owners are going to screw up their drafts which will inevitably end their season before it even starts. I know, that’s probably not what you wanted to hear, but unfortunately it’s the truth.
So why am I telling you this so late in the “off-season” game? My hope is that you can correct the mistakes now, before the season starts.
I’ll start by helping you straighten out your quarterback situation. Sure, if you grabbed Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, Drew Brees or Tom Brady, this article isn’t for you, but lets look past the Top Tier quarterbacks and go deeper into the position. There are a few quarterbacks that some Fantasy “Experts” think could carry your team, me on the other hand, see something completely different.
Let me flash back first. While sneaking into the Fantasy Sports Convention a couple weeks back in Las Vegas, I happened to come upon the “Experts” drafting their Fantasy teams for the up coming season. There were “Experts” from the four letter station using the three letters magazine. Other so called “Experts” were sharing magazines amongst each other. It was like watching Nike executives walking around the office in Reebok shoes.
And I’m back.
My point, just because guys get paid a lot of money to be a Fantasy “Expert” doesn’t mean they are. You’re probably wondering, “Then why should I listen to anything your saying?” That’s a very valid question. See, I have nothing to lose. I do the analysis for free because I love it, and because I’ve been pretty successful at Fantasy Football in years past. Now that I’ve tooted my horn, here’s a look at the three quarterbacks the “Experts” like, and I hate:
Donovan McNabb : Donovan McNabb scares the crap out of me. Coming off right knee surgery, McNabb is walking around with a bulky protective brace. After his last pre-season game, McNabb was seen with ice packs on both knees, not a good sign. Looking past the physical problems McNabb has, I don’t see the weapons around him putting fear into any NFL defenses. Brian Westbrook is a Top Tier running back, but has never played in 16 games in any single season.
The Philadelphia wide receiver corp one paper, is one of the worst in the league. Kevin Curtis, a great number three option on a team, is now the number two option for McNabb. Curtis has never caught more then 60 passes in a season, and doesn’t have the speed to stretch the defense.
On the other side of Curtis is Reggie Brown, who’s in his third season out of Georgia. Brown ,who has 89 receptions in his short career, could fit the mold of sleeper wide receiver (see any story on third year wide receivers). If McNabb can stay on the field, and out of the trainers room, look for Brown to put up decent numbers this year.
If you can stay clear of McNabb I recommend you do so. Here is my projection for Donovan McNabb:
3051 YDS – 19 TD – 10 INT – 143 Rushing YDS – 2 Rushing TD
Brett Favre – The ageless wonder seemingly will not give up the reins in Green Bay. Favre, in his 17th season with Packers feels like he still has something to prove. That’s great if you’re a Packers fan, but as a Fantasy Owner, Favre is a liability. After losing running back Ahman Green to the Houston Texans this past off season, Vernand Morency steps in as his potential starter. If Morency can’t carry the load, which I don’t believe he will, look for rookie Brandon Jackson to step up to the challenge.
I don’t think Favre is too happy about his back field, which means his wide receivers will have plenty to smile about this season. Donald Driver is coming off one of his best season as a pro, and gives Favre a proven star. Greg Jennings, Favre’s other weapon is raw, but could be primed for a break out year.
Favre is a gun slinger, we all know that, but without the same zip on the ball, Favre gets caught trying to sneak balls into double coverage, usually resulting in a pick. If Favre can play with in himself, meaning dump the ball off instead of squeezing it in, he could be a nice #2 quarterback. Here is my projection for Favre:
3210 YDS – 18 TD – 16 INT – 30 Rushing YDS – 0 Rushing TD
Trent Green : For some reason, the Miami Dolphins feel like Trent Green, at 37 is their future. How else can you explain them passing up the chance to pick former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, and instead picked a wide receiver who left his last college game on a stretcher.
But hey, who are we to judge right?
After returning from that hellashish hit in week one, Green was never quite able to shake the cobwebs. In four of the seven games after the hit, Green had more INT’s then TD’s. He never seemed comfortable in the pocket, which not only had an effect on him, but also his receivers. Now with the Dolphins, he has a chance to take a team that has the potential to score, to the next level. Running back Ronnie Brown will have to shoulder some of the load in order for the Dolphins to be successful. If Brown can handle his part, it’ll allow the Dolphins, and Green, to do more play action fakes.
More play action fakes, equal big smiles from wide receivers Chris Chambers, and one of my sleeper picks, Marty Booker. Chambers and Booker form a pretty potent wide receiver corp. The only problem is, will Green be able to get them the ball? Green, like McNabb, is going to have to proven himself early. If he’s ineffective, the big question will be whether or not head coach Cam Cameron will pull the plug and go with Cleo Lemon. Here is my projection for Green:
3110YDS – 18 TD – 15 INT – 92 Rushing YDS – 0 Rushing TD
I agree to all that except the information about McNabb….McNabb will be healthy all year round book it..
