Pitch-and-Ditch for the final weekend

Sep 28th, 2007 by winabango

I apologize for this article being posted late. I had it written, but there was an issue with getting it posted.

If you are still losing in ERA and WHIP, then you should be throwing caution to the wind and throw every available starter over the weekend. If you are winning saves, and losing wins and strikeouts, then you need to get rid of your relievers and throw as many starters as you have slots for. Find probable starters with RP eligibility and go for it. Nothing matters after this weekend. If you are looking for some spot starts for the weekend, then here are a few recommendations.

Saturday:

Jesse Litsch - TOR vs TB - It is an obvious statement that Tampa Bay will help any pitching staff with strikeouts. The last time he face Tampa Bay, Litsch pitched five innings and struck out five, but allowed seven hits and three earned runs. His last two outings were solid performances against the Yankees and the Red Sox. His opponent is Edwin Jackson, who has also been pitching well as of late. However, the Blue Jays bullpen is more stable, and that should aid in producing a win for Litsch.

Brandon Backe - HOU vs ATL - I think it is time the Brandon Backe gets a solid look in the Fantasy Baseball realm. It his last three starts, he had posted two wins and a serviceable ERA of 4.24. The walks have contributed to a FIP ERA of 5.15, and the Braves still have a powerful lineup that can hit homeruns with regularity. Jeff Bennett is his opponent, and he really has not pitched since 2004, and should not pose a problem.

Sunday:

Jamie Moyer - PHI vs WAS - In possible the biggest game of the Phillies season, Jamie Moyer brings his experience to the mound.  The Nationals hit at a league average .273 against lefties, but have hit a below league average 37 home runs.  The Phillies have the best defense up the middle, and Moyer induces ground balls 39.4% of the time.  The Nationals are also one of the top teams is hitting doubles, but with Victorino returning to regular playing time the Phillies outfield speed should limit that.  This pick hinges more on the game and standings situation then any other pick.  If the game is a must win, then the bullpen will be called upon early.  If the they clinch on Saturday (as I hope they will), then expect Moyer to go deeper into the game to allow that key bullpen pitchers some rest for the playoffs.

Aaron Laffey - CLE vs KC - I hate to keep recommending pitchers against the Royals, because one of these days it will catch up with me.  History says that, even if the Royals win, the opposing starting pitcher does not get hurt in the statistical categories.  My greatest concern about the matchup is that Cleveland may rest most of their starters.  That may change the probabilistic ratio of a win, but it should not change the probability of Laffey giving a strong performance.

I will be spending all weekend on the edge of my seat watching the Phillies attempt to make the playoffs.  They have broken my heart the last couple of years, but those Amazing Mets have made my dream a possibility.
