First of all, I would like apologize for the lack of posts lately. I have been very busy at work as of late, and also I am recuperating from a ridiculous last few weeks of the fantasy baseball season. Also, I think that I proved that I am not very good at Fantasy Football. So if you have expertise in football, please let me know, because I would love to add an additional writer.
So the question that I have received in my e-mail as of late is, How did you do last season? Well here are my thoughts on my season:
HNB WHAT? - 8-team H2H 2 player keeper league - Champion
Entering into the season I was the defending champion, and it was very satisfying to now be the repeat champion. My keepers coming into the season were Ichiro and Johan Santana, and I have since traded both of them away. I was able to get some great players late in the draft like C.C Sabathia in the 9th, Magglio Ordonez in the 14th, Josh Beckett in the 15th, and Russell Martin in the 19th. During the season I made some very ugly trades. For example, I traded Santana for Ryan Howard, and then traded Howard for Carl Crawford. I also traded Magglio Ordonez and Scott Kazmir for Matsuzaka. Dice-K promptly began his decline and Kazmir regained his control. I thought I was selling high in Ordonez, since I made this trade at the All-Star break, but I was dead wrong. I also traded Ichiro for Carlos Lee This one was dealing speed for RBI and power, and at least this one worked out well. Somehow that means my crappy trades did not prevent me from winning the title. During the season I made 176 moves, and used pitch-and-ditch quite often during the year and especially during the playoffs. This league took a lot of work, and now my keepers going into next year are Matt Holliday (drafted) and Carl Crawford.
East Coast Swing - 14-team H2H non-keeper league - Champion
This was the first year that I participated in this league, and there were several readers that also participated. I did not draft real well and dealt with crappy play and injuries from drafted players Rafeal Furcal, Rocco Baldelli, Rich Harden, Adam LaRoche, and Chad Tracy. My top steals from the draft was Tim Hudson in the 18th round, and Javier Vasquez in the 14th. I made several trades before the deadline that landed me Travis Hafner for John Lackey, Joe Mauer for Casey Blake, and Johan Santana for Ken Griffey Jr. and Corey Hart. I had such a tough start to the season that I have to make whole sale changes during the second half. I won 5 out of the last 7 series with double-digit wins to finish 6th, and barely make the playoffs. I then proceeded to blow through the playoffs eliminating three regular readers of the site, which was very satisfying. I beat the number one seed by a score of 12-1 in the championship round. This once again proves that getting your teams set before the playoffs and constantly adjusting your roster will win titles in H2H leagues.
Fantasy Baseball Mafia - 12-team roto 5-player keeper league - 3rd Place
Of the three leagues that I participated in, this was the most satisfying one. The competition was great, the deep rosters made it a challenge throughout the year, and this was my first attempt at the roto format. In the draft I was able to get some great value from Randy Wolf in the 28th, Kelly Johnson in the 27th, Ty Wigginton in the 26th, Shane Victorino in the 20th, and Brandon Phillips in the 13th. Unfortunately I also took Chris Carpenter, Vernon Wells, Adam LaRoche, and Barry Zito. I made some good trades, and some poor ones. The poor ones had me give away Grady Sizemore and David Wright early in the season for Vlad and Berkman. I then was able to trade Berkman and another player for Justin Morneau, which minimized my stupidity. Through other trades and some waiver wire moves I was able to gain a solid team balance, and learned so much about the roto style of play (which I wrote about the other week). My keepers going into next year include Matt Holliday (traded for), Brandon Phillips, Cole Hamels, Justin Morneau, and Robinson Cano.
Overall I am pleased with my efforts this year, and hopefully have established some credit with everyone who visits the site on a regular basis.
So, How did you guys do this past season?

This was the first year where I participated in leagues organized with other active, competitive members through the MLB Radio Fans forum (http://mlbradiofans.sonoftheraven.com/viewforum.php?f=1). I am glad they were both keeper leagues since the leagues were great. Usually I just play in yahoo public roto leagues. I had so much fun in my organized leagues I will never do another public yahoo league again.
Overall I participated in 6 roto 12 team 5×5 leagues, 2 on espn (28 man roster) and 4 on yahoo (21 man roster)
ESPN (Keeper - Year 1) - 1st
ESPN (Keeper - Year 1) - 2nd
Yahoo - 1st
Yahoo - 1st
Yahoo - 3rd
Yahoo - 3rd
18 team (5×5 roto - no keepers - 21 man roster) - 2nd Place
Eventual champion has won 4 out of 5 years, so second place was pretty rewarding.
Key moves - Traded BJ Upton (before injury) for Travis Hafner 5/28 and aquired Ryan Braun 5/28
11 team (5×5+OPS+CG - no keepers - 21 man roster) - 1st place
This is my oldest league and we’ll be switching to partial keepers this offseason.
Key moves: Trade David Wright and Brian Fuentes for Carlos Lee and Matt Cain 5/13 - I wish I had this back with keepers, Lee didn’t hurt but it was a knee jerk move to Wright’s start.
Traded Tehean, Matthews Jr, Cain for Lance Berkman - highway robbery in hindsight but other manager had given up on him.
Trade Dan Haren for Justin Morneau 6/8 - My team was deep in pitching HR’s helped the win.
Aquired Ryan Braun 5/28
Not sure whether those trades are that good in hindsight, but overall great year.
I won my 20-team weekly head-to-head - 5 keepers with minor leagues - for the first time (been in it for 6 years). I concentrated on pitching as it is very hard to get good starters in a 20-team league. I had Gallardo, King Felix, James Shields, Rich Hill, Ian Snell and Dave Bush. That rotation with a bullpen that had Valverde, Putz and F.Cordero was the reason I won the league.
I won my 10-team daily head-to-head league (8 keepers) as well. I’ve finished 1st in the regular season numerous times, but have always struggled in the playoffs where it is a crapshoot in a H-to-H league. My team was loaded with ARod, Haren, CC Sabathia, K-Rod, Bedard, Markakis, etc….but I would of never won the championship if it wasn’t for Rickie Weeks. Guy was on fire the last few weeks of the season!
I also finished 2nd in a 12-team Roto and 3rd in a 12 team H-to-H league. All of these leagues I have been playing in for at least 5 years.
