2008 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft
Nov 11th, 2007 by winabango
This is the home of the 2008 Fantasy Gameday Baseball Mock Draft. Even though it is football season, there is always enough time to begin thinking about the next baseball season. Over the next weeks, 12 participants will conduct a mock draft for the 2008 season, and the results will be posted here as the picks are selected. We have a great mix of participants including myself, Paul Greco from Fantasybaseballguy.com, some friends of mine, and readers of the site. The data from this draft will also be entered into the 2008 Average Draft Position and Scarcity Report.
Here is the draft order as selected live via a random draw from a hat by an impartial 3-year old:
- Paul Greco - The Fantasy Baseball Guy
- Duzzy Pieffer - Pronk’s Body Double
- Rodolphe Boulanger - The SWAT Team

- Geoff Hubble - Seedless Sunflowers

Ryan Braun as the 13th pick? Mighty interesting.
Tony wrote:
Where’s Mr. Ortiz at??
Hope he doesn’t get left for 3rd round!
Love: Rollins at 9

Dislike: Granderson at 15 (props if he turns out!)
Alec,
According to Mock Draft Centrals current ADP report, Braun is averaging pick 14.46.
Pujols and Santana with your first two picks? Good job!
I should have know my binky wouldn’t make it past a team containing his name 3 times. Great pick with Pronk - I see him rebounding faster than Jessica Simpson
Pujols-Santana looks like the best 1-2 pickset. Would be even better with Ichiro in the 3rd round.
The Howard-Granderson combo is a batting avg albatross that will be tough to overcome in later rounds even with a postive surprise. Get Jeter in 3rd or Mauer in the 4th round if you can to mitigate the damage.
Victor Martinez went way too early. Catchers shouldn’t go until late 3rd and 4th rounds. Closers in 4th & 5th.
It looks like the next pitcher after Beckett gets taken will be someone looking to bet on a Roy Oswalt bounceback.
Yeah, I wouldn’t say B.J. Upton is a 3rd round pick, but with Brandon Phillips going, and the way the rest of the draft has been, I pulled the trigger.
After Pujols and Santana were left for me, I was surprised Ortiz wasn’t there.
I was surprised Ortiz was! He was a shadow of himself physically last year - too good to let slide.
I wanted Ichiro with my 3rd Pick since I can’t believe he is still available. But I needed a power bat so I went with Ordonez, to go along with JRoll and Sizemore. It took a lot to pass on Ichiro but his low power numbers made it an easier decision. Much harder to get power later in the draft, IMO. I felt like I needed to get a power bat ASAP.
I was surprised that Ortiz got drafted so late.
I fought over the Ichiro decision as well. Even though I have power already drafted, the 30-40 stolen bases can be found late in the draft, or even on a waiver wire during the season. Last year I drafted Shane Victorino late, and picked up Dave Roberts, when he returned from his injury, from the waiver wire. I did fine with steals until both got hurt late in the year.
That is why I added another power bat with Morneau
My thoughts exactly. I remembering picking up Rajai Davis off FA late in the season. I had him for a week and I think he stole like 5+ bases.
I think Ryan Braun will have a huge year in ‘08. Braun (assuming he plays a full season) was on pace for 130 runs, 49 hrs, 139 rbis, and 22 stolen bases. He also hit .324. He will still have some productive hitters in the lineup around him (Hardy and Fielder), so he’ll see plenty of strikes.
The only risk is his inexperience, but he was drafted 5th overall in’05. That tells me that this past year was not a fluke. As long as this league doesn’t have errors as a stat, he should be in the top 10 next year.
I’m a little suprised that CC, Lackey and Verlander went ahead of Bedard, Haren, Kazmir & Oswalt.
Certain guys tend to have wide deviations from “expert” average draft positions. Brandon Webb is one of those guys. In a 12 team league, there’s about a 50/50% chance there’s gonna be one smitten owner who drafts him 10 picks or so earlier than the average. Same with Joe Mauer, Derrick Lee and Francisco Rodriguez. I happen to believe Webb is just about worth what some consider to be a reach at pick 25.
Uncle Cbarlie:
Yeah I definitely agree that Braun is legit. I’m just a little hesitant because he still hasn’t played a full year, but I think I’d probably draft him late second early third.
I also love your Tulowitzki pick. Great numbers for a shortstop. Anybody know what his prospects are for stealing more bases?
Utley with the third overall pick?? Reyes or Rollins would of been the way to go. Carlos Pena in the 3rd round?? He’ll be lucky to crack 30 hrs this year. Russell Martin is a great 4th round pick. He should be the top ranked catcher.
According to Bill James projections, Tulo is projected for 7 steals and 22 home runs in 2008. PECOTA has him not having more then 8 steals in a season. So I would not count on a ton from him. The 20+ home runs is fantastic at the SS position.
Is anyone else feeling Chone Figgins at 63? I wonder if that will be indicative of trends next spring?
Nice pickup with Pence in the 6th round, Seedless Sunflowers. I had a hard time not taking him with my pick at 63, but felt I needed the average Figgins provides.
Pitching has gone pretty much as I would have expected, except for Carmona, who only has one, albeit great, season on his resume. Then again, I took a big chance on Granderson early in the draft.
Since this format only has 1 catcher, I am REALLY surprised that Mauer and Posada are available this deep (pick 70) into the draft.
Smart Pick by Guillen in the MI slot with Rollins already taken. Furcal could very soon be an equally savvy pick right now.
Love the Cano pick, don’t like the Roy Halladay pick. Granted, he’s a hell of a pitcher in real baseball and I wish he were on the Cubs, but his low k/9 hurts for fantasy. Props if he gets 20 wins, but would have gone with Lincecum or Gallardo or C Young instead.
We’ve already seen Pronk and Oswalt go, but I’m curious to see when guys who had off years like Konerko and Vernon Wells are reached for. Similarly, for pitchers, Carpenter, Zito, Jason Schmidt, and Pedro.
I also think it’s hilarious that after my catcher comment was posted that a google-sponsored ad came up for Lance Parrish memorabilia.
I would have clicked it but I’m caught short this X-mas after my Biff Pocoroba and John Candelaria memorabilia spending spree.
I really wanted Cano to fill my 2B slot but winabango beat me too him. Although Guillen will play 1B next season, I’m thankful he is still SS eligible in fantasy leagues. In addition, he will be in a very potent tiger lineup next season.
I was holding my breath hoping that Cano would slip to me.
As far as Halladay, I really do not like him as a pitcher. As any daily reader will tell you, I preach high K/9 pitchers. I convinced myself that taking Harang at that spot was wrong. Turned out that he went with the very next pick. In fact, all four pitchers I debated between with my pick, were taken in the 6th round. Of all my picks, I do not like the Halladay choice, and I will be trying to make up for the strike outs later in the draft.
Having taken part in various mock drafts already on Couch Managers and Mock Draft Central and referring to a few expert drafts, a few picks stand out to me as very early.
Granderson (15) apart from one draft where he was taken #17 he has gone in the 30’s
Lackey #38 the earliest I have seen him taken before this draft was # 47
Verlander # 39 his highest placing so far is #51
Thome # 62 aqain at least a round early as he has a highest pick of # 75
Vazquez # 69 the biggest jump so far because the fastest he has gone is # 104
With regard to Figgins, he ranges from # 40 to # 74 so this pick seems right in comparison
I do not mean to criticise the picks made here, maybe you are right and everybody else is wrong. I am just reporting what I have seen
I disagree. I like the Halladay pick. It gives you a cy young candidate that will give you quality starts. He won’t give you a lot of k’s, but you know he’ll bring your era and whip down along with a great chance at a W. You can make up k’s later in the draft.
Yeah I was debating between Pence, and another player, but ultimately I felt the other player had a better chance of slipping to me with my next pick. If Pence can maintain his high average, that will be the most impressive thing. Hopefully it doesn’t end up hurting that my first outfielder taken hasn’t even played one full season yet.
In regards to Zito, I am always amazed at how high he gets drafted. He hasn’t had an off year since 2003, when he was still good.
well I’m the only one that has yet to take a pitcher. I hate taking pitching early in the draft since its so unpredictable. I find value late in the draft and use the pitch or ditch strategy.
I was surprised how early Vasquez went but he was #6 in strikeouts, still too early IMO, but my strategy is to go heavy on offense in the early rounds.
I normally take my first pitcher in round 6, but I was surprised at the lack of selection at my pick. I feel that I jumped at a pitcher, and I wish I had taken another bat.
[…] 2008 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft […]
Vazquez was one of the guys I liked and there definitely was a run on pitchers. Probably 10 SP taken ahead for their expected draft position. I’ve always like Vazquez and combine that with his strikeout ability it seemed to be a viable pick. I’d rather get someone I like early than settle for someone else later.
Admittedly, I also took him early to see if another player would make it back to me.
Also worth pointing out…Felix is probably the more “appropriate” pick at 69, but I for one am tired of the “King Felix” hype. At some point you need to put up the numbers that the pundits repeatedly call for.
I can’t believe how late Brian Roberts was taken. I wanted to take him earlier but I needed more power than speed so I went with Guillen.
sorry you did not like victor martinez at 2. show me a better catcher or run producer. certainly not granderson, sizemore, or beltran. beltran a .268 lifetime hitter and sizemore slightly better. good luck playing a season with a o hitting catcher.
round 9 and 9 teams with no catcher. never saw a draft like that.
apart from Posada I do not see any going soon now the top four have gone
YEA, GUFFY. I SPENT ONE MISERABLE SEASON WITH CATCHERS WHO HIT .230. THERE ARE NOT MANY OUT THERE.
HOW ABOUT MY BOY, TEJADA GOING TO HOUSTON? MIGHT HIT 40 HRS THERE.
I’m in a keeper league and I have a really tough decision. Would you keep Weeks or Kendrick? Weeks could be a 30/30 with and average around .270 if healthy. Kendrick is a lock for a .325+ avg. and maybe a 20/20.
Choosing between the two is a tough decision. Weeks is a sexy pick because of the potential of a 30/30 season. i personally do not think he will ever do it until he proves he can stay healthy and lower the strike out rate. His walk rate is also terrible.
I personally would keep Kendrick, because i would rather have a 20/20 player that is not going to kill my batting average.
Weeks was considerably better last season after a trip to the minors. His early season woes were put down to not being able to trust his repaired wrist, a confidence he regained facing lesser pitchers in Triple-A and brought back with him in September. I am sure that if you compare the season splits, his walk totals and on-base percentage improved a lot in September.
Whether he will keep that through to next April remains to be seen.
Health seems to be a permanent issue with Weeks along with fellow Brewers Sheets and Hardy.
Couple of nice picks, Uncle Charlie. I was just reading the projections for Fukudome, which project him as a possible 5th round pick. I had Gallardo on every team I could last season, and look to draft him this year as well. Your selections help to narrow my options for my next pick significantly.
I think Planet 10 is drafting horribly. Howard can put up hr’s & rbi’s but so can cabrera with a much higher avg and less s/o’s. that wouldve been the smart pick especially with rodriguez & wright off the board. granderson as your #2?? that pick disgusts me lol you could get him rounds later the other 4 of’s that went in the same round, those guys should go off the board well in front of granderson. with picks like those id love for you to play in my league hahaha
[…] 2008 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft […]
Lots of SPs and RPs in the current round. I’m not too worried that I have only drafted 1 pitcher total while the majority has more than 4P.
I’m curious to see where Joba and Hughes go in the draft.
BLEACHER, YOU WONT GET ANY ACES OUT OF WHAT IS LEFT AT PITCHER
Pitching goes way to high in drafts and are very unpredictable. Last season I did very well getting value for pitchers late in the draft. I ended up with guys like Hill (14th), Lilly (23), Maine (26),
BET YOU DID NOT WIN LEAGUE WITH THEM.
I got 2nd.
Smart pitch-and-ditch strategy can help make up for an ace, but only if you really work at it. Look at the pitch-and-ditch recommendations that I made during the last two weeks of the season. The combined stats over those two weeks were better then any ace during that time period.
The other element that is left out is making trades during the season. Draft a pitcher late (like Maine), and then when he is dominating package him with another player to get an “ace” starter.
There are many ways to handle pitching
Hey planet 10,
Now knowing that Rowand is going to San Francisco, would you change your pick?
Rowland going to San Fran makes him a lot less desirable, so yes, I would have made another pick if the signing had occurred prior to my pick.
As far as Granderson, I agree I probably picked him too early, but I do think he matches up very favorably with Sizemore, and Crawford.
I stand by my 1st round pick of Howard, especially in his home park his power numbers will outdistance Cabrera, who much as I love the fact he’s with my Tigers now, is going to feel the effects of 81 games at spacious Comeriaca Park.
I’d love the chance to play against you, Jersey. I managed to finish in the money in all my 15 leagues last year but three.
Comerica Park, that is.
planet 10 what leagues do you play? i am looking for good ones. thanks, ron
How did I end up with nearly the entire 25 man roster of the Boston Red Sox?
CHASING SAVES, YOU GOT A FEW BUT I GOT YOUR BEST ONE.
Doug Mirabelli?
NO, BECKETT
That sir is your opinion.
I like the Billingsley Pick. I was targeting him in my draft. Guess I missed out.

[…] 2008 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft […]
Hello run on saves!
Pedro has to be the ultimate risk/reward. I wonder…if this were March and we knew no more would he go there again?
It will be interesting to see what happens between now and March on Pedro. I’m thinking, if I don’t hear anything, I’m taking him a little earlier.
I like the B.J Ryan pick. I was hoping for him to fall to me. Took Kevin Gregg instead.
THANKS BLEACHER, STARTED TO TAKE HIM EARLIER. COULD BE COMEBACK OF THE YEAR.
The knock on B J Ryan is when will he be availalbe to close. He is not expected to be ready for action until mid May and then as a middle reliever. Possibly ready to resume closing duties after the All Star break.
In that case Accardo must retain some fantasy value.
Certainly not a bad pick in round 17 though
According to Rotoworld, Ryan began to throw in mid-September and it appears as if Ryan is on track to be ready for the start of the 2008 season, but he’s still got a long road ahead of him.
No update since.
I hope they did not get their infomation from the Toronto GM
I think Zito will rebound or at least be better than last year. He got his huge contract last year and had too much pressure against him. I was thinking about drafting him but already having a Giant pitcher (Cain) I decided against it. Even though, my last pick, Gorzelanny doesn’t play for a winning team either.
now the names start coming out of the woodwork. cant believe jose guillen was available in round 23.
The suspension at the start of the season may have had something to do with it. Also the move to Kansas.
As it happens I would have taken him next if you had passed.
[…] 2008 Fantasy Baseball Mock Draft […]
Some of these picks remind me of that game over in the corner of the bar… not the triva game or the spot the differences game, but…. darts. Yeah. Throwing darts.
When you get this deep of a draft, you tend to need to throw darts, and see what hits and what doesn’t during the year.
Planet 10 - Granderson at #15 overall was extremely too high
Ball 3, Strike 2 - You could’ve gotten Alex Rios at least 2 rounds later. What’s the point in over reaching for a player? Think of it as an auction. If his fair market value is 12-15 dollars, why pay 25 dollars? If he does have a breakout season you got even value. It’s a lose- lose situation. If he doesn’t progress you lose, if he performs up to expectation you break even. On the flip side if you get him in the 6th-7th round and he performs at a higher level in which you drafted him you WIN. If he performs at an even kill you break even, and of course if he falls completely on his back you lose.
You guys need a lesson in fantasy baseball logic.
Cdub2k,
I agree that Granderson was picked too early. However, put his numbers up against Sizemore, and you will see no difference between the two. When Sizemore is selected there, no one complains.
As far as fantasy baseball logic, is there really any logic to it? Each person has their theory of what is right and wrong.

the current Mock Draft Central ADP list for 1/11/08-1/18/08 has Alex Rios at the 30th ranked player with an ADP of 31.01, an earliest draft of 21 and a latest of 47. The list is based on 363 drafts.
the ADP listing on Couch Managers has Rios ranked at 33 with an ADP of 34.2.
it seems that your thinking on Rios is out of kilter with everyone else at the moment and there is no way he would have been available at # 55
Come on Dixie Bombers
Prince Fielder #6 was bad enough then you follow up with Victor Martinez #19 when Johan Santana was still on the board?
I am sure Seedless Flowers was all smiles following you in the draft.
Oh well thanks for chasing away my post fantasy football syndrome with a mock draft.
