On The Wire - 4-13-08
Apr 13th, 2008 by winabango
Here is this week’s installment of On The Wire. Please remember, do not hesitate to e-mail anyone of the staff members when evaluating players on the waiver wire. We are all here to help you make the right decisions. I can be reached at winabango [at] fantasygameday.net.
In an effort to try to help, I have begun to add my rating of a player based on league type.
So let’s get started…
J.D. Drew OF BOS - Drew has had a very nice start to the season. Last year was easily the worst season for him. I know he had some injury issues, and apparently a lot of personal problems, but he could not hit a ball out of my backyard. However, a new year has brought on a .387 batting average, and most importantly, 3 homeruns. Currently, he is a must add in all formats at this time, but have him on a short leash.
- Add in AL-only, deep mixed. Cover injuries in shallow mixed.
Evan Longoria 3B TB - If an owner was impatient and dropped him and he is available in your league, pick him up as a bench player. He has now been called up, and is starting at 3B for the Rays. This guy is an outstanding hitting prospect, and will only help your team. However, do not invest too much in him to start. You never know if he will start off like a Ryan Braun, or an Alex Gordon. So proceed with caution and pick him up to stash on your bench to start.
- Add in all formats, especially if you have injury issues.
Brandon Inge 3B/OF DET - Talk about a resurrection of a career. When Curtis Granderson went down with a hand injury, I and many others, cringed at the idea of Inge playing center field. You know what? So far, so good. And now he is getting a start at catcher. Inge’s playing time may be reduced once Granderson returns, but as of now, there is no timetable for that. So until then, ride his .306 batting average as far as it will go, especially if you have injury issues with your team.
- Add in AL-Only and deep mixed. Watch in shallow mixed, or play on short days.
Joe Crede 3b CHW - Here is another player that was left for dead going into the season. After being traded unsuccessfully, he has responded by hitting 4 homeruns, including a grand slam again today. He even hit in the lead-off spot the other night. With his hot start, I don’t think Fields is coming back any time soon. So until anything changes, enjoy the hot streak from a solid hitter. Don’t forget, he did hit .283 with 30 homeruns in 2006. That was not that long ago.
- Add in all formats.
Jeff Niemann SP TB - If you frequent this site, you know that I love to watch pitching prospects. Well, here is a pitching prospect that has fallen off the radar due to injuries over the past few years. With Matt Garza going on the DL, Niemann gets that shot to take his spot in the rotation. Niemann was a first round pick (4th overall) in 2004. Last year in Triple-A he had a decent K/9-rate (8.45) and posted 12 wins. The best part is a low HR/9 rate of 0.89, and a terrible walk rate of 3.16. So watch him closely, and see if he sticks.
- Watch closely in all formats.
Pete Moylan RP ATL - With the injury to Rafael Soriano, the door has been opened for yet another closer candidate. This is another reason why you just do not pay for saves. Moylan is not a high strikeout pitcher, but he will get his fair share. The best part about him revolves around his consistency, and that he threw 90 innings last year. With that consistency, and a job that will not be challenged until Soriano returns, Moylan is a must have closer.
- Add in all formats.
Gavin Floyd SP CHW - Floyd is a pitcher that is dear to my heart. Once a top prospect in the Phillies organization, I saw him many times as he developed. Floyd has a solid fastball, and an outstanding curveball. The issue with Gavin was that he walked too many, and since he was behind in the count, could not throw his curveball often enough. Now he has started the year with 2 wins, and more importantly a 0.97 WHIP. However, his K/BB is 1.00 with 6 strikeouts and 6 walks over those two starts. So this is another pitcher to watch closely and use in spot starts at this point.
- Pickup in AL-Only. Monitor closely in deep mixed and shallow mixed.
Dontelle Willis SP DET - Hmm… Did you read my On The Wire segment from last week? If you did, then hopefully you dropped Willis like I had suggested. If you have not, then what are you waiting for? Willis is no longer a train wreck waiting to happen, because it has already happened. I normally do not toot my own horn, but… Beep, Beep.
- Drop in all formats.
