On The Wire - 4-20-08
Apr 20th, 2008 by winabango
Well, once again, I am a day late in getting this week’s On The Wire segment. Over the past two days I have celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary, and Brady’s 1st birthday. So needless to say, it has been a very busy last few days. So let’s get started
Boof Bonser SP MIN - You have got to love someone named Boof. I am mentioning about Bonser, because I think this is an excellent spot start pitcher. The 1 and 3 record and 4.70 ERA will scare of most. However, he has a 3.81 FIP, and more importantly, a 3.00 K/BB ratio. Along with his 3 quality starts, he has also posted a HR/9 of 0.78, and anything under 1.00 is considered good. So why spot start him? The Twins offense is weak enough that he most likely will not get the run support. So I would put him against the weaker American League teams at this point.
- AL-Only - add
- Deep Mixed - spot start
- Shallow mixed - use for pitch-and-ditch if needed
Felipe Lopez 2B/SS/OF WAS - Well… I guess it is time to start looking at Lopez once again. Many of you know that I drafted him in the Gameday league, and dropped him because he was not getting playing time. Guess what he has now? That’s right… Playing time! To top it off, he now has OF eligibility in Yahoo leagues. One of my fellow league mates, Fantasy Hurler, in the Writers league has been touting Lopez over the past few weeks. I am in agreeance with him. Cheap steals with some power anyone?
- NL-Only - must add
- Deep Mixed - Bench player for now
- Shallow Mixed - use on short days
Mike Cameron OF MIL - Cameron is due to come back from his 25 game suspension. The center field job is his, upon returning, unless Gabe Kapler can continue to prove that he belongs there. A 15/15 season the rest of the way is not a reach. In Fact PECOTA is calling for 21 home runs and 14 steals in 502 at bats. That is solid production in deep leagues.
- NL-Only - should add
- Deep Mixed - begin to consider carrying on the bench
- Shallow Mixed - not needed yet
Matt Stairs 1B/OF TOR - With the departure of Frank Thomas Stairs stands to possible gain plenty of at bats. Some sites are reporting that on of the backup catchers may serve as DH. That would be terrible! Stairs is a decent hitter with average power, but in a deep league, playing time is worth a ton.
- AL-Only - must add especially in deep leagues
- Deep Mixed - use as a bench player
- Shallow Mixed - Leave alone
Manny Acosta RP ATL - So much for last weeks waiver wire pick-up of Peter Moylan. Acosta now becomes the main candidate for saves with both Soriano and Moylan on the self. If you enjoy chasing saves, the Atlanta bullpen is the place for you. Grab Acosta until Soriano returns sometime later this week.
- NL-Only - must add for this week
- Deep Mixed - must add for this week
- Shallow Mixed - add if a closer is needed
Erick Aybar SS/2B LAA - With Howie Kendrick going to the DL, Aybar should get full-time at bats for the next two weeks. he should be a cheap player that can add steals and improve your batting average. His .362 BABIP seems a bit high, but players with speed tend to have higher BABIP rates. The 92% contact rate is fantastic, but the lack of walks may prove to cause his batting average to fluctuate some.
- Al-Only - Add if speed is needed
- Deep Mixed - add if speed is needed
- Shallow Mixed - do not add
Ervin Santana SP LAA - It is time to start jumping on the bandwagon. I have always liked Santana’s strikeout rates, but the home/road splits scared me. However, this year seems to be the turning point in Santana’s career. He has been utterly filthy this spring, and he has been doing it no matter where he pitches. So far he has posted a 2.67 ERA, but has also posted a solid 3.31 FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). So I would expect a bit of a regression in his ERA, but ride this one for a while if you can.
- AL-Only - Must add
- Deep Mixed - must add
- Shallow Mixed - add to cover injuries
Luke Hochevar SP KC - This is a name that many may not know about. He was the number one pick in the 2006 draft, and he is making his first start today against Oakland. In only 12 innings last year he posted a 2.13 ERA. I know that is a small sample size, but he has performed well this year in triple-A. The key stat is a 2.00 K/BB ratio. That is good control for such a young starter. So while everyone else in your league is waiting for Kershaw, Hochevar might be a better pick-up for this year since there is no timetable for Kershaw to be called up this year.
- AL-Only - add if a keeper league
- Deep Mixed - add to bench and watch closely
- Shallow Mixed - do not need to take the chance right away
Cliff Lee SP CLE - This seems to be the article for pitchers on the waiver wire. However, I could not pass up adding Cliff Lee to the list. A few years ago, Lee took the Fantasy world by storm, and then fell of the radar. A few terrible seasons will do that for you. So far he has posted a .40 ERA with 20 strikeouts. The best part is that he has a 1.70 FIP, which means that his performance has been legit for the most part. Do I expect it to continue? Not really, but ride it while you can.
- AL-Only - must add for now
- Deep Mixed - spot start
- Shallow Mixed - use as pitch-and-ditch
Out of these 3 players which 2 do you think will have a better season. Mark Teixeira, Adrián González, and Derrek Lee.
