I received a question via e-mail asking my opinion on Justin Masterson. Masterson is a fantastic pitcher, but I do not see him staying with the team very long. Masterson’s best quality is his hard heavy sinker, is Brandon Webb like. He is not worth an add at this point, unless you are in a deep keeper league.

What are your opinions of the following players; Loney, Votto, Conor Jackson? I currently have all three, but think I am carrying too many players to fill the position. We have no CI spot, and Votto is also eligible in LF. My Util is usually occupied by Encarnacion, but that is fairly fluid.
    Thanks

I would rank the players this way: Jackson, Loney, Votto. Loney and Jackson are pretty close in my mind, but Jackson gets the edge based on lineup and park. Yes I think you should deal one of these three for another need. At this point I would try to deal Votto. He seems to have the hype buz working right now, and you might get more for him.

What is your opinion on Dustin McGowan and Shawn Hill?

I have watched McGowan’s last three outings and he has some nasty stuff but I feel as though the second he misses with one batter his mind is lost and its all downhill from there. Does he have the makings of a pitcher who can mentally work his way into a top tier pitcher?

Also, Shawn Hill is one of those pitchers that baffles me. When he is healthy and on he is a great pitcher. I drafted him and stored him on my DL, now I am not sure if he is worth the roster spot on my team. Thoughts?

I am a huge fan of D-Mac. I think what you are seeing is the fruit of still being a very young pitcher. Being a fan of a team, and having that player on a Fantasy Baseball team can cause you to look too deep into what you are seeing. We all would be better owners if we watched the stats and not the games.

As for Hill, I feel the same way that you do. He can be so hit or miss. That possibly more of a reflection of the team around him. For example: Hill has a BABIP of .449 with a .332 batting average against in 2 starts this year. His FIP is at 1.90 which means that good times are ahead for him.

What am I to do with Papi?!?!?!

  7. on 26 Apr 2008 at 2:24 pm#7winabango

I am not sure what you will want to do, but I traded him away in the one league that I had him. I saw him in Boston on Tuesday, and he just cannot turn on the ball right now. Most people are saying that he will come out of this and be fine this year. After what I have seen this season, I am not one of them. I think he will be good, but a 40 HR season will not happen.

I am not saying that you panic, but see what you can get for him. I traded Papi and Haren for Miguel Cabrera and CC Sabathia.
