Random Thoughts

Here are some random thoughts from around the Fantasy Baseball realm:
- The CC Sabathia deal will be an improvement for him. Feasting on NL Central pitching will make his strikeout rate increase substantially. The opposite effect of the trade is in the major prospect that went to Cleveland, Matt LaPorta. I do not think LaPorta will be up anytime before September, but one never knows.
- For those of you who held on to Clay Buchholz all this time, your patience will be rewarded. It clearly looks like he will be recalled now that Justin Masterson has been sent down. I look at the Masterson move as one that is designed to save Masterson’s arm for the long run. There is also talk that they might move Masterson to the bullpen, and bring him up again as a middle reliever. I have read that scouts believe that Masterson projects better as a reliever then a starter.
- Wow… Evan Longoria is really good. This is the kind of razor sharp analysis you get from us here at Fantasy Gameday.
- Man… I sure do wish that I did not give up on Manny Parra this year. I drafted him in all three of my deep leagues, and I proceeded to drop him in all three leagues after April. You gotta love Fantasy Baseball, and how it can humble you quickly.
- I am truly beginning to think that if Robinson Cano played in Kansas City he would be waiver wire material. Seriously, I have listened to the Yankee’s broadcasts and they think he is the greatest hitter since Ted Williams. UGH! He has only posted an RC/27 (more on this stat later this week) of 3.41, which is well below average. Sure his batting average will come around, but what good is a player who hits .320 and only scores 70 runs? Come on… even Freddy Sanchez can do that. Do you even remember who Freddy Sanchez is?
- I did not take long for the Braves to recall Jeff Francoeur. Do you really think that 3 days of work will change the whole season? According to Frenchy, one night of hitting instruction changed his whole approach a few years ago.
- Along the same lines of being sent down… Brett Myers is supposed to only be in Triple-A for 20 days. However, if he doesn’t get his head out of butt, he should be down there longer. How effective can a demotion be if you know that you will be recalled after a certain period of time?
So what teams should you spot start pitchers against? Here are the five worst scoring offenses this season:
- Washington - 326
- San Diego - 329
- Seattle - 354
- Kansas City - 362
- Toronto - 364
I personally thought Washington would be better this year. However, their new ballpark actually is suppressing homeruns, and they strikeout a ton. By way of caparison, here are the top five teams by strikeouts:
- Florida - 740
- San Diego - 704
- Arizona - 683
- Oakland - 655
- Texas - 653
So needless to say… pitch anyone against San Diego. Ironically, Seattle has the fewest strikeouts against at 470. This definitely means that they just plain suck.

As an owner with a Justin Masterson problem
…
The sox have always been very un-Dusty Baker and protected their pitchers, it makes sense. If Masterson spends 2009 in the bullpen he’s a non-factor to me as an owner (Sox fan, different story). Novice that I am with the real baseball scouting - there’s something about that delivery that just screams reliever. Couple that with the Sox 2009+ rotation and you’ve got to wonder.
1. Josh Beckett - Signed through 2009 with vesting option for 2010
2. Daisuke Matsuzaka - Signed through 2012
3. Tim Wakefiled - Signed until he retires (basically)
4. Jon Lester - Controlled through 2011
5. Clay Buchholz - Controlled through 2013
Until Wakefield hangs it up and why would he making 4M for knuckleballing. Masterson and Bowden (for that matter) are odd men out.
I also think that Masterson will be used as a reliever next year, and then brought into the rotation when injuries occur. However, the flip side can also happen… Masterson can be soooo good in relief that he never makes back to the rotation.
Just take a look at his splits. The writing is on the wall.

He’s walked 3x more lefties. Right now the Sox need another guy before Okajima and Papelbon. Delcarmen is good but you can’t put all the pressure on him. Timlin is D.O.N.E. Hansen hasn’t panned out. Masterson fits great for September.
