Official 2009 Average Draft Position is Here!

Feb 15th, 2009 by winabango

Average Draft PositionIt is here!!! The official 2009 Fantasy Baseball Average Draft Position and Scarcity Report from Fantasy Gameday is now available. This is the ultimate resource that started it all, and has grown to over 600 players. It now provides trending information from preseason version, and also from 2008.  That means you can easily tell who fell out of favor since the beginning of January, or from 2008.  We also gathered data from “expert” and regular user draft from multiple sites including Mock Draft Central, Yahoo, CBS Sportsline, and Coach Managers to name a few.  This means that the Average Draft Position data we provide is not influence by the rankings on a particular site.  There are several other sites that provide ADP data, but non of them provide it in a tiered format like we do.

Sure you could get you ADP data from other sites, but why would you?

Here are some of the benefits of our ADP data over other sites.

  • A total of 622 players are tracked
  • Average round calculations for multiple league sizes
  • Scarcity Reports that splits the ADP data into tiers
  • Trending information from the pre-season ADP
  • Trending information from 2008 to 2009
  • Compiled data from various sources.
  • It is Free

Yes… I saved the best part for last.  All of this great information is FREE.  All that I ask is that you check out some of the other content that are posted on the site.  It will only take you a few moments, and it will help tremendously.

Without further delay…  you can download the 2009 ADP and Scarcity Report here, or below

2009 Average Draft Position and Scarcity Report

Now here is where you can help.  If you used the ADP last season, and it helped you out, please post your story in the comments section. In addition, please post a link to this resource on as many message boards as possible.  I really need the help in telling the world about this FREE resource, but of course, I can understand if you don’t tell your league mates.

Thank you very much. This is one of the most valuable resources around, and I use it for all my draft preparations. In fact, with the release of this resource, I was able to finalize my tiered cheatsheet this evening, which I will post on GoogleDocs later this week and will provide a link to the spreadsheet for anyone who wants to download it in all my articles on this site.

ADP report day is better than Christmas. I believe this is the third year in a row I’ve used this report and it changed my whole idea of when and where to draft the players I target. I credit it fully for my success in the last three drafts. The only problem is I think this thing is so valuable that I refuse to share it with my league-mates.

Unfortunately for me, my league mates use it against me every year. I need to develop a plan to “out smart” my own work.

  5. on 16 Feb 2009 at 7:53 am#5Hilarious

Isn’t that the truest test of how valuable a draft tool is? How worried are you that your league mates will find it?!! This is an invaluable tool- when used in companion with projections it helps not only to plan a draft strategy, but also to make changes on the fly when things inevitably alter course during the draft. To me this spreadsheet is perhaps the most innovative and useful draft tool available. I used it to great effect in preparation for two drafts in very difficult 16 team leagues last year, and had my best season to date, finishing 1st and 2nd in the two leagues.

  6. on 16 Feb 2009 at 12:29 pm#6Bill

Keep up the great work. I really like having the scarcity report to go along with the adp, using both helped win my keeper league last year. Thanks.

  7. on 16 Feb 2009 at 6:53 pm#7Are Fantasy Baseball Experts Really Risk-Takers? | Fantasy Ball Junkie

[…] The data was collected from Kelly at Fantasy Gameday, a very enjoyable site about fantasy baseball. For the past several months, Kelly has been collecting drafts conducted by “experts” and mock and real drafts done by those who care enough about fantasy baseball to weigh 14th round selections in the dead cold of winter. He has just released a free Average Draft Position & Scarcity Report resource and invites everyone to check it out.  […]

Love this report! This will be the third season I’m using it to inform my draft prep and I find it totally invaluable. Thanks so much for doing the work and putting it out there — for free no less. Simply great. Will do my best to promote… though not to my leaguemates! Good luck this season!

  9. on 17 Feb 2009 at 7:37 am#9mike

Great information, love it. This is an awesome resource to have at your fingertips.
    thanks for doing it.

  10. on 18 Feb 2009 at 4:47 pm#10Dave

Thanks. I add my favorite projections to the 12 team mixed spreadsheet and am set.

  11. on 18 Feb 2009 at 9:15 pm#11Chuck Anderson

I’d like to suggest a poll: Will you spend more time looking at
    1) The ADP Report
    2) The SI swimsuit issue

  12. on 18 Feb 2009 at 9:15 pm#12Chuck Anderson

    Yeah, I know my answer

  13. on 19 Feb 2009 at 11:52 am#13timglase

Chuck gives me a great idea, Kellly. You need to have a section of the ADP that ranks hottest ball girls. (I do wonder if this post will make it past moderation). :)

  14. on 19 Feb 2009 at 11:54 am#14timglase

Have you guys seen the cutie that sits down the third base line for the Padres? In one word: “Wow!”

  15. on 21 Feb 2009 at 1:17 am#15franky

wow this is the reason i come back here, this is by far the best draft tool i’ve seen around. thanks again for the great work.

  16. on 21 Feb 2009 at 7:22 am#162009 Projections - Zimmerman and Bruce « Fantasy Baseball Trade Market

[…] Well, Tony, if you consult Fantasy Gameday’s Average Draft Position Report, you’ll see that both Bruce (98th) and Zimmerman (106th) look to be no more than solid 9th Round picks!  I’d say your instincts about either one NOT being taken in the first five rounds of any drafts is “spot on”. […]

  17. on 21 Feb 2009 at 9:20 am#17andy

Thanks!! I’m so glad I found this site a few years ago - 1st place in my league every year since. Last year, they even changed the format to H2H which I had never played before. Still came in 1st for the regular season (lost in the playoffs to someone who had a crazy good week).
I’m torn about spreading the word. I enjoy seeing half my league show up with some magazine edited a month ago.
    Thanks again.

  18. on 23 Feb 2009 at 10:57 am#18Jake

The one-page “scarcity report” is hands down the best cheatsheet availible for free online. I have used it on draft day for the last two years in a very competitive league among friends, in a live draft, and it provides a quick and accurate way to see how your league is shaping up. Don’t let the name fool you — the report is far more useful than just a number that gives a “scarcity value” of a player. The organization of the report allows you to quickly craft a strategy for the next several picks of your draft at any point in the process. Thanks for once again providing this useful tool.

  19. on 23 Feb 2009 at 3:27 pm#19Tyler

This is THE BEST fantasy resource I have found.

I have used this for the last two years, finishing 1st and 3rd in a very competitive 14-team league, drafting solely from this resource.

Thank you so much for providing this again!

  20. on 23 Feb 2009 at 3:51 pm#20Johnny Archive

Nice work. This type of information is extremely valuable. Well done!

  21. on 24 Feb 2009 at 8:13 am#21Asashoryu

WOW! Incredible! How have I missed this before?

    THANK YOU!

Sorry if this is explained elsewhere, but what do the asterisks (*) and carats (^) mean?

  22. on 24 Feb 2009 at 9:51 am#22dbhammel

Im kind of new to the advaned fantasy baseball strategem, can someone give me some basic adivce as to how to use position scarcity and these types of resources. For example, how do i know when to pass up an OF for MI in my 8 team league vs my 12 team league, or do i basically just go by the big board? Sorry for being a newb, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  23. on 24 Feb 2009 at 12:33 pm#23martin

    thanks kelly! very useful information

  24. on 24 Feb 2009 at 4:58 pm#24winabango

Asterisks (*) - multiple position eligible in 10 games played
Carats (^) - Top 50 prospect within the past 3 seasons

  25. on 26 Feb 2009 at 3:54 pm#25Lyon, Tigers, and Saves … Oh My! « Fantasy Baseball Trade Market

[…] According to the ADP numbers put together by our friends at Fantasy Gameday, the fantasy community is a little bit confused as to who to select as Detroit’s closer. Brandon Lyon is being selected as the 35th relief pitcher taken, Joel Zumaya as the 39th and Fernando Rodney as the 46th, so I decided it was high time to roll up my sleeves and take a closer look (pun intended) at the Tigers’ bullpen! […]

I would like to thank everyone for their kind comments. It truly is worth the effort.

  27. on 02 Mar 2009 at 10:39 am#27Flash613

Two years ago my league switched to a draft from auction. I have won each of the last two seasons using this wonderful tool (combined with a value sheet that’s on another site but I won’t name in case any of my league mates read this ;-) Thank you very much for making this available !!

  28. on 02 Mar 2009 at 3:27 pm#28beantown

Great work as always Kelly. This is a very valuable draft day tool.

Are you expecting to put out an update? Apologies if this has been asked but I didn’t see it mentioned. I know that usually you put out a final version with more mock drafts right around now or within the next week. Thanks.

  29. on 02 Mar 2009 at 7:14 pm#29winabango

Due to time constraints, there will not be an updated version. I released the official version later than previous years, and have three times as much data in it. So the draft positions won’t change a whole lot even if I enter more drafts. Obviously players like Ben Sheets get dropped way down the list.
