Warning: Kevin Slowey is coming to Cleveland

2012 fantasy baseballBoard up your windows, Cleveland!

Earlier this winter the Colorado Rockies acquired right-handed pitcher Kevin Slowey from the Twins for the dreaded "player to be named later". Yesterday, the Rockies proceeded to trade Slowey to the Cleveland Indians for Zach Putnam.

Who?

I remember targeting Kevin Slowey in Fantasy Baseball drafts because he had outstanding control and a decent strike out rate. Unfortunately, his home run rates were through the roof. In fact, last year Slowey's HR/FB rate climbed to a career high 1.52. Considering 46.2% of the balls put in play were flyballs; that is a horrible rate.

Maybe the Rockies looked at the stats and realized that adding Slowey's fly ball rate to Denver's thin air was a really, really bad idea. Perhaps the signing of Jamie Moyer allowed the Rockies to move Slowey.  Did I really just write that?

In any event, the Indians' Fausto Carmona, or should I say Roberto Hernandez Heredia, was to be part of the rotation this season.  That's right; Carmona is no longer a younger pitcher with upside, but rather an established 31 year-old right hander.

Since the discovery of Carmona's true identity, he has been locked up in jail (recently released), and now faces difficulty in getting back to the United States before Spring Training is scheduled to start. In the wake of this event, I believe the Indians are attempting to cobble together the backend of their rotation. Kevin Slowey is a perfect low-risk pitcher to add at this time.

But should we care about any of this?

No. None of the players mentioned here should be drafted.  This includes Fausto, I mean, Roberto Heredia and Kevin Slowey.  Neither of these guys will add enough to your team to warrant being rostered at the start of the season.

Do you think Kevin Slowey will bounce back with a change in scenery?
