Quick Hits: Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo

It is now time to start thinking about baseball...not that it is ever time not to think about baseball.  It is the American pastime after all.

As a participant in many mock drafts so far this offseason, I have been watching certain guys and their perception by the drafters in these early drafts.  I gotta admit, not a lotta love for the potential corner outfield pair from the White Sox.

What does that mean for you?

Here's what I see them putting up as numbers in 2012:

  • Alejandro De Aza 554 AB 75/10/60/.275/20
  • Dayan Viciedo 610 AB 75/21/85/.270/2

Those portend to be decent numbers for a OF3/4, no matter what kind of league you are involved in (assuming 10 to 14 teams, anything over that maybe you go for them as your OF 2/3).  I don't recommend picking up both guys for your team, as I am not sold on the White Sox as contenders this year.  Too many offseason trades, not enough depth, and now we got Fielder and Cabreara in Detroit unbalancing things.

Currently, the ADP for the two is low, so you are looking at values here if things remain static (don't bet on that...spring training is coming soon).  According to our ADP, De Aza is the 73rd ranked outfielder taken (328.10) and Viciedo is the 62nd ranked outfielder (292.00).  This means that both players would be selected, on average, after the 25th round in 12-team drafts.

In our 16-team slow mock draft, Alejandro De Aza was selected during the 11th round and Dayan Viciedo was selected during the 18th.

Now, anytime you can get a full time OF that can give you either speed or power (not both, unfortunately) you should take advantage.  Ideally you want a .300 hitter, but by the time you are getting these guys, the only high average hitters you will find are part time players most likely.  Live with it and hope for the best.

Remember this information when we start our mocks in February.  Life will be back to normal soon, when spring training kicks off.  I can't wait.

"I wish Lillibridge would catch a break and find regular playing time."

Couldn't agree more, I have no idea what else he needs to do.

Big O... Viciedo would be a great third base option heading into the season. However, Morel's defense is soooo much better and it would take an implosion to warrant moving Viciedo back there.

I wish Lillibridge would catch a break and find regular playing time.

whatever happened to viciedo being a 3rd baseman ?
maybe , if morel bombs , the switch will be made and lillibridge will get some full-time at-bats .

thoughts ??

unless absolutely SB-starved , given the choice of these 2 outfielders , i'll always go with the home run hitter .

I didn't realize just how bad the White Sox OF could/would be until I read this, Ivar. I had to check out the depth chart on MLB.com before I realized that you were writing about these two because they were, indeed, going to be starters. Having said that, I buy the projections - especially Viciedo's.
